The absolute dating method first appeared in 1907 with Lord Rutherford and Professor Boltwood at Yale University, but wasn’t accepted until the 1950s.The first method was based on radioactive elements whose property of decay occurs at a constant rate, known as the half-life of the isotope. The half-life of C is approximately 5730 years, which is too short for this method to be used to date material millions of years old.
This isotope, which can be found in organic materials and can be used only to date organic materials, has been incorrectly used by many to make dating assumptions for non-organic material such as stone buildings.
Another problem with carbon dating actually has to deal with bones.
Bones can be contaminated easily by naturally occurring factors or artificial contaminates.
Characteristics / attributes of an artifact that relates to its surface appearance, such as color, decoration, and texture -- leading to stylistic classifications.
SYNONYMS OR RELATED TERMS: technological type CATEGORY: term DEFINITION: Characteristic(s) of an artifact that is the direct result of how it was made (manufacturing methods) or due to the raw material used (constituents) -- which lead to technological classifications. At the end of the video lecture this week, after we had discussed certain types of dating and different methods of how it is performed. One problem that I found interesting was the idea of “Old Wood”.
